    I started listening to Metal around the time Metalcore was born and spreading. I went from Marilyn Manson to Rammstein, to Sum 41, to Nightwish, to Arch Enemy, and from there I stumbled upon Bullet For My Valentine, and for me it was Metal anyway. I mean, I was listening to a lot of Melodic Death Metal from Sweden, Finland and Norway, so, it wasn't that different! And then Guitar Hero 3 made me discover Killswitch Engage, and I was sold. I'm just pretty sad I jumped on the hate wagon against ''Post-Hardcore'' and Emo stuff when I was finishing High school... Man, I ended up loving those genres too, but I have been a ''purist'' for way too long, it seems... I wish everyone could just be open and positive when it comes to discovering and enjoying art, especially music. Now I'm 31, and maaaaan I enjoy almost every genres, I'm opening myself to other stuff, and I feel so much richer now, not hating on genres for the sole purpose of... Hating 🙄 I've become tolerant and started to find true happiness discovering new stuff! That's the life! There are so many things that are so good out there, it would be a crime not to try listening to them just because ''it's not Metal''

    To some degree I feel like metalcore was kinda subjected to the same sort of “auto-hate” from metal fans that 80’s hair metal bands probably received. I mean the superficial similarities are incontrovertible like the hairstyles and clothing choices. But just like 80’s hair metal, metalcore has definitely stood the test of time and is considered appropriately iconic for its time period as it relates to alternative music.

    Many dance music artists say your tunes are whack if you use synth presets, and don't craft your sounds yourself. At some point it becomes "Well did you code your DAW yourself? Otherwise it's not real music"

    I thought bands like attack attack and of mice & men were actually towards the later end of metalcore. What would you consider a band like underoath if this is metalcore? Because underoath has so much more depth and musicality compared to these bands

  • @orenom6704
    @orenom6704 17 хвилин тому

    The main difference between metalcore and real metal is the scene. I mean metal has a lot of blues influences so would you put Deicide and Buddy Guy on the same tour? Metalcore is a new scene same as punk, hardcore and metal. Some of it combines and some bands attract crowds from all those scenes but its not the same music. Metalcore fans did not grow on Slayer and Autopsy or Mayhem, they probably grew on Blink182 and Attack Attack, their "death metal" is Suicide Silence not Entombed. There's nothing wrong with it but they share almost nothing with metal culture or Punk culture for that matter. Not in the appearance, production of the music, the lyrics, the philosophy behind the music, the message (like many are christians), the writing style. Stealing At the Gates riffs doesnt make you a melodeath metal band. KSE and As I lay Dying is metal, its not Core as I See Stars or Asking Alexandria. Its not gatekeeping its just having ears. I think thats why people hated metalcore. I remember i hated it at first but now i like some of it, doesnt make it metal. You got it right with the boyband attitude and all that. Metal wasnt supposed to be pop (as a music genre), its kinda like a pop metal, same as NU Metal was. It uses the same instruments and distrotion but its a different genre. Nirvana has distortion and screaming they're not metal and nobody tries to put them as a metal band. So why put Of Mice and Men?

    I was completely burnt out on heavy music around the time metal core started and aside from a small handful of bands (Candiria, Converge, DEP are the big 3) and old school death metal, I had no idea the genre existed. I only “saw” the genre, never heard it. Unfortunately that also meant that I missed out on OG deathcore. I think I’d have really liked that when it came out.

    I think its good that Metalcore brings more people, esp. girls into metal. But i still dont like these boyband/pop-range they use to introduce them. Not that its bad or w/e, i just dont like pop. If i want this i just will put on the radio. These Groups have massive skills and creativity, i always enjoy them till the refrain when this always same mimimi starts. so i understand people compare it to edsheeran/justin bieber and so on. And there is a lot of critics, pop industry has to take, esp. of selling themself off and taking no risks. so nearly every popsong sounds the same, and if rly something new comes, everybody hops on so that in between one to two years the shit is more then overused. same to metalcore refrains, sounds nearly always the same, takes the same topics, is for the same clients. and just to clear it out, i dont want to say they are bad, but there is a reason a lot of metal-fans dont like it, and when the reason is, they sound to boyband like they might have a point.

    I did not hate metalcore. Especially metallic hardcore & early metalcore, Hatebreed, Earth Crisis -> Converge, Rorshach, Botch -> From Autumn to Ashes, Killswitch Engage, Bury Your Dead, early Trivium, God Forbid, Shadows Fall, Unearth. I hated some of the bands but there were quite a few I liked quite a bit. I did kinda dislike scene kids, which includes dating one or two. And I kinda hated deathcore bc those scene kids were not only worse but they thought that WAS real metal and any other metal was not, including actual death metal somehow. I, in fact, quite liked the period of the 00s where hardcore/punk, post-hardcore, screamo, alt rock, noise rock, nu-metal, industrial, thrash, groove, melodeath were all cross-polinating into a weird creative soup. But the poppier more radio-friendly side ultimately won out and took over. Most of the more 'metal' bands either became straight up heavy metal bands or died out, like my personal favorite God Forbid--and now Doc Coyle is making butt rock riffs for some radio rap-metal project that gets more streams but I do not enjoy. Then there's those bands like Attack/Attack and that kinda stuff which is the direction things went and that metalcore is still doing way too much of it today: pop-oriented EDM, pop rock/R&B clean vocals, butt rock melodies & hooks, repetitive percussive "djent" riffing (much of which ironically sounds absolutely nothing like Meshuggah, prog metal, math metal, mathcore, etc. it sounds like boring nu-metal riffs), I find that stuff largely unlistenable and a now-stale amalgamation of other generic rock styles. A lot of these bands sound like they're trying to make music that Drake could add a guest verse to. It is not remotely for me. And if you go to these kinds of shows today it looks like an office park just let everybody out of work. It's not like "a scene" anymore, which is almost worse. They dont even have band t-shirts like they dont want anyone to know, which is a big tell that you know what you're listening to is lame & unimpressive and it's a guilty pleasure. It didnt really stand the test of time in that way and it didnt really become part of the larger metal scene either, it became almost a wholly separate thing from metal that is much more for normies and pop oriented. Most heartbreakingly of all it has practically replaced mainstream rock music, so now watered-down pop-punk & butt rock inspired 'metal' or "metalcore" Linkin Park clones are the best you're gonna get. Maybe a decent prog rock/metal band that sounds like a contemporary Tool clone breaks through a bit. Now it's just a more easily consumable type of heavy music, a less threatening version of metal that takes all my least favorite musical trends of the last 2½ decades and combines them into something that is like the antithesis of my personal tastes.

    The things initially hooked me to your channel was when you focused on short documentary style videos on bands/artists and genres. I think your strong points are your unique perspective, your opinions (quite opposite from mine usually), and your ability to make educational content interesting. This really showed in your documentary-style vids and also still in your interviews. To be extremely honest, I was disappointed in the last vid where you addressed these issues because I don't want to see you pander to your audience that just wants to hear sarcasm-filled tier lists. I remember earlier this year you mentioned that you wanted to focus on a more positive mindset and not to be an asshole (not a quote but it was something like that) and I was happy to hear that because while I think you can be funny, the endless sarcasm isn't one of your strong attributes (and I enjoy sarcasm). But when I watch your stream videos It's a lot of annoying comments and I tend to get bored of hearing the same "too busy fingerblasting to care about weedily deedily riffs" jokes. To me personally, that's why I won't watch all of your videos, but I do watch a good amount. You introduced me to a lot of artists that a really like now and helped me to open up to some new perspectives on music and that's the impact that you've had on me. I know you feel stuck in this cycle of making videos that you don't want to do for the money but I would like to see more deep-dive videos maybe even not in your comfort zone. I don't have a solution for you, but just wanted to let you know how I feel about your new vs. older content. I hope you can find a good balance of work and mental health.

    I can definitely see that the "boy band" factor played a big part in it. In high school my girlfriends and me were huge fans of metalcore. The music but of course we had posters from Oli Sykes and Andy Sixx on the wall. And we all know something isn't cool if girls like it. /s
